The Great Bear Scare of 2013

Yesterday, we did something new for the first time as a married couple: went camping! I had been wanting to go camping with Justin for a long time, so we were excited to go with our friends on our day off (Pioneer Day in Utah). Our campground was gorgeous. We had a really nice time hanging out, talking, eating, exploring, and roasting marshmallow's over the campfire. Once it got close to midnight, we started getting ready for bed. Justin had researched a lot about how to be safe from wild animals while camping-- AKA, no trash laying out, changing out of the clothes we cooked in, not wearing lotions/perfumes, etc. The campground site manager had told us there were cougars roaming around right near our campground just the day before, so we were extra cautious. We got in our tents, talked a little, then said a prayer that we would be protected as we slept. Right after that, I fell asleep.
A little over an hour later, Justin woke me up. He reached over and woke up our friends.
There was some kind of animal right outside our tent.
It was a weird, grumbly snarling noise. We had no idea what it was, but we were scared out of our minds. We sat still for a very long time, just listening. We heard several kinds of noises-- the grumbly noise continued. Eventually, we heard a galloping noise (deer?). So many things were going through our minds. We kept praying and praying that whatever it was outside would go away and leave us alone. We all were awake for close to two hours!! We kept hearing noises on and off. Crackling branches, footsteps, breathing. It was so scary! Around 3 in the morning, we heard a dog outside our tent. We decided to open up our tent and head for the car after it left. We saw someone from a neighboring camp site, and he said that he had heard lots of noises for the past hour and a half. We were all spooked! Our little group drove around to see if we could see anything, but after a while, came back to our site and slept (rather uncomfortably) in the car.

We all woke up around 7am. It was light out, so we got out and started packing our things. About five feet away from our tent, we saw a big imprint in the tall grass that surrounded our area. It looked like a big animal had been chilling there for a while. It was really scary to see the evidence!! We are pretty sure it was a black bear. There had been many black bear sightings in the camp ground before...
We felt so blessed that we had been cautious by not leaving any sweet or food-scents near out tent. We were truly protected by angels! We were all dead tired, but so happy that we had all been safe. It was definitely a terrifying experience, but we are so grateful. We concluded that it was a black bear hanging around, then some deer came up, saw the bear, and scampered off. Once the bear left, a dog must have come around and hung out for a bit (we later learned that someone's dog had ran off). It was very lucky that we heard the dog, knowing that it was relatively safe outside.
We made good memories, and have a crazy story to tell. It was definitely the scariest camping experience I have ever had (since all my "camping" experience is from Young Women's Girls Camp!). I don't know if we will camp again anytime soon, but man. I sure did love being surrounded by all that nature.

I truly believe that God protected us that night.
I am ever so grateful.

Holy Molly! That's scary. I don't have experiences other than camping with my parents and girl camps, so I don't know how I'd do taking my kids camping. But it's definitely fun!! :)
