thrifty shopping in a non-thrift shop

this past weekend, i went thrifting... for the first time in a LONG time. i actually got super lucky, and was so stoked!! only once in a while do i get this lucky. life gets super busy. being a married, part-time working, college student... well, i don't have a lot of time or energy to go thrift shopping!

Mainly because
1) where I live (Provo, Utah) we do NOT have good thrift stores nearyby. All the poor college kids shop at our local thrift shops, so it's always super picked over, and you honestly can't find much of anything. aaand
2) I don't have the patience to thrift. I have a hard time thrifting. I always give up after a good 10 minutes of searching! I just don't have the thrifty luck some people do!

So, I present to you: thrifty shopping in a non-thrift shop.

Just because you don't go to a thrift shop doesn't mean you can't be thrifty when shopping!! I've found some awesome purchases in your typical, every-day stores!

1. when shopping online, check Google for discount codes!

This is huge for me! I enjoy online shopping. When I do, I always make sure to search Google for a discount code. Nine times out of ten, you'll find some promo code that will save you some monies! I LOVE this- saving money is one of my favorite things :)) retailmenot.com usually has some good ones! Be sure to check it out! Whether it's 10% off or free shipping, why not save when making a purchase anyways, right?

both of the cardigans i'm wearing were purchased online at oldnavy.com with promo codes i found :)

2. check out the sale section!

I think one of the main reasons thrift stores overwhelm me so much is that there is a huge hunt. And if you find something you like, it might not be your size, so it's game over. Shopping the sale section is a little bit easier on me, since most of the time there's a variety of sizes and colors :))

the skirt on the left- forever21 ($5). booties on the right- target ($15)

3. shop their closets

There are many many bloggers who have a "shop my closet" page. I think this is AWESOME. Why not thrift online, right? From fashionable people!! I've definitely taken advantage of that, and bought a few items from other bloggers.

shirt on the left thrifted from ashley (i believe in unicorns). skirt on the right thrifted from elaine (clothed much)

4. check ebay!

is there something you want, but just can't bring youself to pay that much?? Well, i say check ebay! You can probably find it for cheap!

skirt is from ebay ($12). i had been wanting a striped skirt for a while! Spike bracelet is from ebay, for $14 with free shipping. i didn't want to spend $60 on a Stella & Dot bracelet which is exactly the same!

5. don't give up on thrifting!

Although for the most part, I do enjoy thrifty shopping in a non-thrift shop, I can say I have been blessed to find a few treasures in thrift shops. If you have a local thrift shop that's promising, don't give up!! If you have a free Saturday to spare, go take your time and thrift!! :)

all three of my tops were thrifted for under $4 each.

as you can see for the most part, my favorite places to shop thriftily are Old Navy, Target, and Forever21! But that certainly does not stop me from thrifting time to time :) I hope that this post helped you to realize that you can be thrifty in a non-thrift shop!! :)

i'll for sure post some pics of a few things i thrifted in future posts :))
Thanks for reading!

xoxo

I love thrifty shopping! We have phenomenal thrift stores in my area, but I agree, you can watch sale items and get just as good deals that way as well. Loved seeing the items you've found!

One of my favorite tricks in shopping mall stores is to head straight for the back. That's where they keep all the clearance!

That's exactly why I stay away from thrift stores...SO many clothes and the hunt is overwhelming! But I like your advice. Shopping the sale section is great, and I really like how you've bought some clothes from other people's shop my closet. Great finds!

I never have good luck at thrift stores--I think it also makes it harder to find 2nd hand clothing if your size isn't really 'average'. Sale and clearance racks at regular stores are awesome! I even check the children's clearance racks at a few stores--you would be amazed how cute you might look in a little girls' large or XL sweater! :)

great tips! i almost always exclusively shop during sales. a lot of my favorite stores constantly have extra 30%, 40%, or even 50% off, so I always wait for that rather than pay full price.

Great tips! I prefer thrifty shopping at non-thrift shops too! haha... I don't have the patience to thrift shop. I can never find anything in my size. I'd rather find something on sale at forever 21!
