All About Facial Implants

Facial Implants

Facial implants are compatible with facial tissues and are used during a facial augmentation. Facial implants are made to enhance the physical contour of an individual’s face. Two common facial implant areas are the chin and cheeks. However, the jaw can also be augmented through facial implants.

What are Chin Implants?

When an individual’s forehead and mid-face are not in proportion with his or her chin, a chin implant may be an ideal way to create a well-balanced contour. There are also those who have chins that are recessed, which is when the chin appears to fade into the neck.

Chin implants, which are also known as genioplasty and mentoplasty, can also be performed with other cosmetic procedures to further balance facial features. Many individuals have a rhinoplasty and chin augmentation done in conjunction because a chin implant may influence the appearance of an individual’s nose.

Ideal Candidates for Chin Implants

Chin implants are ideal for those who are healthy and have a weak, undefined chin or protruding nose because the procedure brings a better balance to the face. In addition, the procedure is recommended for those who have had dermal fillers but want a permanent solution. Individuals who have jaw conditions, such as TMJ, will need to be examined and cleared for the procedure by a dental professional.

Chin Surgery: The Procedure

The duration of the procedure may last from 30 minutes to an hour. When a plastic surgeon performs a chin implant, he or she will make a small incision inside the mouth or under the chin to create a pocket where the implant will be placed. The surgeon will choose an implant that is the correct size and shape to bring a balance to the patients face and will insert it over the jawbone.

Typically, after the procedure the chin will be taped to reduce discomfort and swelling. If the sutures are in the skin, they will be removed five to seven days after the surgery. When an individual has oral sutures, they will dissolve in about seven days.

Chin Surgery Recovery

It is expected for individuals to experience minimal pain and swelling in the chin area for a few days following the procedure. Furthermore, some individuals may find it difficult to talk or smile the first few days following the surgery. There may also be slight bruising. It is important to follow all post operative instruction on eating and dental hygiene.

What are Cheek Implants?

A staple feature of beauty are high cheekbones. Although cheekbones do have a functional purpose, they also serve as the basis of the facial landscape. As individuals age, they will start to lose volume in the cheeks, which will result in the muscles and skin drooping causing facial folds and jowls. High, voluminous cheeks are typically associated with a youthful appearance, and sunken, droopy cheeks make individuals appear old. In addition, genetics can cause individuals to have flat and undefined cheeks. Unfortunately, these individuals may appear older than their age.

Cheek implants are one of the most effective cosmetic procedures individuals can have to achieve a youthful appearance. Recently, cheek augmentation has gained popularity in the plastic surgery industry because there has been increased awareness of the importance of volume in the midface and a youthful look. Other cosmetic procedures can help individuals faces look more taute, but cheek implants make individuals faces look younger. When an individual has cheek implants, it will lift the entire face and decrease nasolabial folds.

There are many individuals who decide to have cheek augmentation after having injectable fillers for several years. Dermal fillers fill the cheeks with volume, but the results are not permanent, so individuals will have to have the procedure done every year. Cheek augmentation is more desirable to many because it is a permanent solution to lost volume in the cheeks.

Ideal Candidates for Cheek Implants

Cheek augmentation is ideal for those who are in good health and have sunken, week cheekbones. Many individuals who have the procedure administered want to restore lost volume, which is due to aging, in their cheeks. However, it is important to remember that cheek augmentation isn’t just for those who want to combat aging. There are individuals who have flat cheeks due to genetics, and cheek implants can be an effective way to achieve high, full cheeks.

Cheek Implants: The Procedure

Cheek augmentation typically lasts around 30 to 45 minutes. If cheek implants are being administered with another procedure, which may include eyelid surgery, a facelift, or forehead lift, the surgeon may use these incision areas to insert the implants. If individuals are only having cheek implants, a surgeon will make an incision inside the upper lip or lower eyelid, which will create a pocket where the implant will be inserted.

When the procured is complete, the area will be dressed to reduce swelling and discomfort. The severity of swelling and discomfort will vary depending on if other procedures were performed in conjunction with the cheek augmentation.

Cheek Surgery Recovery

Individuals will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions, which will include dietary restrictions and limited activities. However, these instructions will vary based on if the patient has another procedure performed at the same time. Individuals are also advised to move their lips and mouths as little as possible for the first few days following the procedure. Stitches inside the mouth are expected to dissolve ten days after the surgery.

Most individuals will find they feel and look better in a short amount of time, but it is advised for individuals to refrain from jarring activities for several weeks after the procedure.
